2 Individual Masters titles for North Shore players
Napier are hosting the New Zealand Masters and also the Trans Tasman Masters competition. This tournament has been going since the 13th October starting with the Trans Tasman Challenge .Gary Duberly, Lisa Cowlard and Mark Waldin where part of the NZ team to take on Australia who managed to win on the first day. They lost on the second and then the Thursday was a rest day for everyone. Unfortunately NZ were unable to take it out with it tied at 6 – 6 it went to a count back and Australia won 24 -21.
From the trans Tasman teams events it was onto the age group individuals. Gary and Lisa were now joined in Napier by Michelle Heron, Sue Kim, Mandy Kennedy, Sarah Agi and James Leddy. North Shore can boast 2 Age Group Individual Winners in Gary Duberly and Sue Kim.Results for Individuals were
Winner: Gary Duberly. Gary came up against Stu Davenport in the final and won 3-1.
Winner: Sue Kim. Sue was to play Michelle Heron in the second round beating her and sending her into the special plate round. Sue’s final opponent was Nadine Cull and she beat her 3-0. Michelle went on to be placed 4th in the division
Mens 65 – 69: James Leddy – Runner Up Plate
Mens 55-59: Mark Waldin -Classic Plate (3rd) beating Marty McKelvie in 5
Women’s 35-39: Sarah Agi – Special Plate Winner
Women’s 45-49: Mandy Kennedy – Classic Plate. Lisa Cowlard had to retire
There are still 6 players in Napier as now they go into the district teams event. Of the 10 players in the team 5 are from the North Shore with Lisa supporting and a backup reserve. The North Shore players in the team are Gary Duberly, Mark Waldin, Michelle Heron, Sue Kim and Mandy Kennedy. Results on how the teams are going are posted daily on the Squash NZ website and also on the Eastern Squash website.
